We’re looking for an HCPC registered biomedical scientist to lead the automated biochemistry section of our UKAS accredited department of clinical biochemistry at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The automated biochemistry section at Southampton processes around 3,300 samples per day with a test repertoire that supports a large teaching hospital. Clinical specialties that the laboratory supports are wide ranging and include cancer care, bone marrow transplantation, neurosciences, cardiothoracics, paediatric and neonatal intensive care, ophthalmology and vascular surgery. You will have day to day technical and managerial responsibility for this busy section as well as managerial responsibility for the point of care laboratory.  

You will be required to work 37.5 hours per week including occasional evening and weekend working.

The clinical biochemistry department holds UKAS accreditation and incorporates automated biochemistry (including Point of Care), specialist biochemistry, Trace Elements and chromatography.

Automated biochemistry equipment includes two Beckman Coulter AU5800s and two Beckman Coulter DxI800s connected to a Beckman Coulter Power Express track as well as a standalone Beckman Coulter AU680.

UHS is one of England's largest acute teaching trusts and is rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission. In the latest national NHS Staff Survey it ranked seventh in the country for staff engagement and fourth best nationally for the proportion of staff saying that they would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care.

Southampton is a vibrant city offering a wide variety of facilities such as the West Quay shopping complex and is an international centre for ocean sailing and other water sports. The city is ideally situated to be within easy reach of London, the New Forest and the South Downs, with the Isle of Wight on the doorstep and access to the continent by air and sea nearby.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
