Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, operational, credit, pension, insurance, compliance, regulatory, market, reputation and geopolitical risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.


We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join this team in the role of Head of Approvals.


Impact on the Business / Function


  • Manage a team that:

    • Contributes to the achievement of Bank targets by promoting strong underwriting standards.

    • Has a high level of self-awareness around the transaction approval process focusing on material items and recognizing the importance of commerciality and speed to market.

    • Embeds Global Standards.

  • Position the Bank’s loan portfolio by aligning new advances and resources to the “Grow” sectors and limit exposures to the “Restricted or Controlled” sectors ensuring compliance within the Country Risk Plan.

  • Implement guidelines received from APH Risk on credit quality / issues, profitability, sectors and procedures.

  • Promote credit quality through timely and forward looking risk reviews and contribute to early detection of weak / deteriorating credits.

  • Work with his / her team of Credit Approvers to continuously improve the quality of credit applications.

  • Be directly involved in the credit application process.

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Ensure that credit risk policies related to Wholesale risks are understood by the appropriate stakeholders at Regional / Local level.

  • Develop strong and regular forums to communicate with the relevant stakeholders within GBM, CMB, Product Management and Regional / Local risk functions to understand their strategic goals / key priorities / constraints and to ensure that MYH Risk is in line with these policies.

  • Be fully engaged around growth plans by ensuring active dialogue in pipeline meetings, whitelisting and customer visits. Be conscious around creating positive rather than negative tensions.

  • Manage Sustainability and Reputational Risk in the businesses within acceptable levels.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Provide support / guidance to the development of account managers in the business lines.

  • Champion a high performance culture.

  • Coach Credit Approvers with a strong focus on skill development.

  • Facilitate decision-making among Approvers, empowerment of Approvers to exercise their approval authorities with confidence.

  • Develop sector expertise within the Approval teams.

  • Manage succession planning.

  • Manage costs and headcount in line with plan.

  • Deputize for the Head of Wholesale Credit & Market Risk in his / her absence. 

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Adhere to the Operational Risk Framework and the highest levels of internal control and compliance.

  • Perform tight controls especially in the following areas: monitoring of approval conditions, overdue annual reviews, monitoring of covenants.   





  • A Post-graduate degree in Business Administration, Finance or a related field;

  • Exposure to demanding operational environments to gain insight into effective risk management applications;

  • Working across all levels of the organization to understand cross-functional linkages and interdependencies, as well as the implication of risk at both a strategic level and at the business unit level;

  • Good knowledge of Wholesale/Corporate Banking and Markets and related Risk Management, particularly in relation to developments of the management discipline and regulatory impact in this area;

  • A high level of professional competence which helps to determine solutions around appropriate risk measures, risk processes, risk monitoring and management;

  • Understanding of the Group global strategies and collaboration with the business to accomplish these strategies;

  • Demonstrated ability to assess Risk trends, both internally and externally;

  • Ability to form effective relationships and exercise influence at the most senior level of the organization;

  • Demonstrate business knowledge, such as leading a P&L unit;

  • Communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Established financial and accounting acumen;

  • Strong leadership and ability to lead change;

  • Developing and retaining critical talent and building an effective leadership team.
