The role:

Queensland seeks to lead the world in positive health outcomes and as part of that ambition, is committed to driving real change to Close the Gap. This new role, reporting to the Director-General and advising the Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services as well as Queensland Health executives, provides a unique opportunity to make a profound change to health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland.

The role has arisen as a result of extensive consultation with communities across the State, identifying the need for a leader who can provide insights to Government and health services on how best to work with communities. The Chief Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Officer will work closely with an advisory committee and will recommend initiatives and advise on priority policy and practice changes required to improve health outcomes. This role will require an exceptional and dynamic professional who is capable of influencing change across the health sector, serving as a champion for improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The successful person:

This role requires an energetic and passionate thought leader with an outstanding record of achievement in driving change. The successful candidate will have a strong background in health leadership and the ideas, influence and powers of persuasion to lead the delivery of rapid and radical improvements in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland.

Candidates should demonstrate extensive knowledge of health issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Queensland, as well as a proactive approach to developing initiatives to address those issues. This role is critical to enable our Vision that by 2026 Queenslanders will be amongst the healthiest people in the world.

Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be indigenous to the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community.
