Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) Public Health Laboratory, North Sector is seeking a qualified full time Medical Microbiologist to join the Public Health Laboratory as a Program Leader with a focus in Virology. This position is based out of the University of Alberta Hospital site in Edmonton, Alberta. The successful applicant may also be considered for an appointment with the University of Alberta.

The Public Health Laboratory, APL offers an excellent environment for career development opportunities to pursue clinical and research activities. Our collaborative partners include the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and the School of Public Health. The core functions of the Public Health Laboratory include (but are not restricted to) testing for pathogens of public health significance, population-based screening, laboratory surveillance to support cluster detection and disease trends of public health significance, specialized diagnostic testing, environmental water testing, education, and research.

The individual will also be expected to participate in the undergraduate and post-graduate training programs of the University of Alberta and develop an ongoing research program that complements the activities of ProvLab. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and is located in Edmonton.

Minimum qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta with a medical microbiology certification (or eligible for) (FRCPC) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the American Board of Pathology. Physicians must also have current Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to balance service and quality imperative in a resource-sensitive environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively, building trust in working relationships, and being an overall team player

An excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance is provided. Options to function as either a contractor or an employee exist. Starting remuneration is commensurate with the level of fellowship training and experience. Remuneration range for a Laboratory Physician / Pathologist in Alberta is $353,874.00 to $411,650.00.
