Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) North Sector, in partnership with the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, in Edmonton, Alberta is seeking a qualified full time Medical Biochemist (MD) or Clinical Biochemist (PhD) Leader for the North Sector, APL. The North Sector, APL includes all of the former Edmonton Laboratory Services, and the Northern Cities and Communities of Alberta. The Section Chief for Chemistry in APL North Sector, is a key laboratory leadership position that directly reports to the North Sector Medical Director. The successful applicant may also be considered for appointment with the University of Alberta’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. This includes opportunities for teaching and independent and/or collaborative research.
This position oversees the laboratory operations as a medical and scientific leader of the Biochemistry Section within APL, North Sector. Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
Responsibilities will include operational supervision of technical and support staff, overseeing the laboratory quality assurance program, on call requirements, teaching and supervision of trainees, clinical consultation with physicians, surgeons and oncologists, and liaising with various multidisciplinary committees and groups that develop and monitor laboratory policies, processes and procedures. In addition to Core Chemistry, the successful candidate will facilitate operation of a number of sub-specialty testing areas such as toxicology, trace elements, special chemistry/endocrinology, and prenatal/maternal screening.
Qualifications:Minimum of five (5) years of experience in laboratory medicine, with a leadership/management component. Minimum qualifications include a MD with eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta with certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Physicians must also have current Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage.
PhD candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in laboratory medicine, with a leadership/management component and certification as a clinical biochemist by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (or equivalent). Prior administrative experience is an asset.

An excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance is provided. Options to function as either a contractor or an employee exist. Starting remuneration is commensurate with the level of fellowship training and experience. Remuneration range for a MD Pathologist in Alberta is $353,874.00 to $411,650.00. Board Certified PhD salary is in accordance with the C-Stream Salary Structure and will commensurate with qualification and experience.
