Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Head Nurse, assumes responsibility for providing quality care to patients according to established Policy, Procedures, and Standards of Nursing Practice. Demonstrates leadership competencies while in charge or acting as Head Nurse. Participates in Nursing Administration, Education, and Quality improvement activities in support of the Hospital’s Mission and the development of Nursing Services.  Supports the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Nursing and contributes to educational efforts.

 

Organizational Relationships:

  • The CNS and the Nurse Manager are partners in leading the nursing clinical practice area. The CNS coordinates and guides clinical activities/projects of nurses within a practice area. The CNS is accountable for collaborating with members of the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies.
  • Report to:Assistant Director of Nursing/Delegate
  • Responsible to:Head Nurse/Assistant Director of Nursing/Director of Nursing
  • Liaises with:Special Projects/Practice Development Coordinator, Nursing Staff, Education & Training Department, Patients/Consumers, Physicians and other multi-disciplinary team members

Accountability/Objectives:

  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for increasing the level of skills of the nursing staff by means of development and implementation of unit based education programs
  • Planning and coordinating an effective orientation and in-service program.
  • Implementation and ongoing facilitation of unit based education programs

Responsibility/Accountability:

  • The CNS is responsible for maintaining current professional knowledge and competencies and contributing to the advancement of the practice of nursing at the unit/system, local, and/or national and international level.
  • Direct Patient Care
  • Serves as a reliable source of information on the latest evidence supporting cost-effective, safe nursing practices.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team using the nursing process to integrate the nursing perspective into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family.
  • Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a select population of patients/families.
  • Conducts comprehensive, holistic wellness and illness assessments using established or innovative evidence-based techniques, tools, and methods.
  • Initiates and plans care for individual patients or populations of patients.
  • Designs and evaluates innovative educational programs for staff, patients, families, and groups.
  • Identifies, collects, and analyzes data that serve as a basis for program design and outcome measurement.
  • Establishes methods to evaluate and document nursing interventions.
  • Evaluates the impact of nursing interventions on fiscal and human resources.
  • Nursing/Nursing Practice
  • Collaborates with others to resolve issues related to patient care, communication, policies, and resources.
  • Creates and revises nursing policies, protocols and procedures using evidence-based information to achieve outcomes for indicators that are nurse-sensitive.
  • Identifies facilitators and addresses barriers that affect patient outcomes.
  • Leads clinical practice and quality improvement initiatives for a unit or a program.
  • Collaborates with nurses to develop practice environments that support shared decision-making.
    Assists the staff in developing critical thinking and clinical judgment.
  • Creates a nursing care environment that stimulates continuous self-learning, reflective practice, feeling of ownership and demonstration of responsibility and accountability.
  • Collaborates with others on content and operational design of orientation, clinical competency, and other clinical educational program development.
  • Mentors nurses to acquire new skills, develop their careers and effectively incorporate evidence into practice.
  • Provides input for staff evaluation.
  • Provides formal and informal education for nurses and other health professionals and health professional students.
  • Leads in the conduct and utilization of nursing research.
  • Organization/System Leadership
  • Consults with other units and health care professionals to improve care.
  • Leads/assists groups to enhance the clinical practice of nurses and improve patient outcomes.
  • Develops, pilots, evaluates, and incorporates innovative models of practice across the continuum of care.
  • Designs and evaluates programs and initiatives that are congruent with the organization's strategic plans, regulatory agency requirements, and nursing standards.
  • Participates in need identification, selection and evaluation of products and equipment.
  • Advances nursing practice through participation in professional organizations, publications, and presentations.
  • Implements and facilitates professional education services for the nurses in the assigned unit/department.
  • Maintains an effective system of communication with all levels and disciplines within the health team
  • Provides input to the Head Nurse on staff performance and competency assessment/completion.
  • Participates in relevant committees as required.
  • Participates and supports the quality improvement plan within the unit/s.
  • Maintains on-going evaluation of the standard of nursing care, developing plans for improvement through implementation of quality client focused care.
  • Utilizes evidence based medicine to ensure best practice of nursing care.
  • Identifies educational needs through assessment of patient complaints, risk management and feedback from Occurrence Variance Reports (OVR).
  • Acts as a positive role model and provides a safe working environment and safe working practices for patients.
  • Supports unit/hospital based Nursing  development activities:
  • Adheres to Hospital and Department of Nursing policies and procedures and Standards of Courtesy.
  • Maintains own professional development through participation in ongoing education and professional groups.
  • Complies with the standards laid down by the Approved National and International Accreditation Agencies.Reports any occurrence not consistent with the operation of the hospital or standard of service for patients, employees or visitors, and situations which put patients, staff or visitors at risk from injury or other harm.
  • Performs other assigned duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse with Current License (BSN - Western Standard)
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing with a clinical focus (preferred)
  • Relevant Post Registration Clinical Qualification e.g. Post Graduate Diploma/Certification
  • Evidence of Current Continuing Education
  • Minimum of 5 years of current relevant clinical hospital experience.
