About the Role

The Clinical Nurse (CN) role provides advanced clinical and problem-solving skills, expert planning and coordination skills in the clinical management of haemodialysis patients/residents/clients with complex care needs, ensuring quality standards are met. This role works autonomously within the Healthcare Team structure and is pivotal in the planning, managing and delivering of haemodialysis specialist nursing care. The CN provides clinical leadership for professional and clinical practice, education and research. The role supports in management activities including portfolio responsibilities, managing all aspects of education, training and assessment, provides orientation and skill development in the field of haemodialysis and renal nursing.

The role supports the Renal Educator (CNC) and demonstrates strong team commitment through open communication and active participation in the development and achievement of departmental goals.  The role conducts formal and informal education for staff, developing and implementing programmes where necessary. Including but not limited to training staff and supporting completion of mandatory and unit competencies, planning, implementing and evaluating unit orientation, and review of clinical skills. This role focusses on haemodialysis skills but works collaboratively throughout the renal service, liaising with other departments as the need arises.

The Metro South and Ipswich Nephrology and Transplant Service (MINTS) is the only super-specialist renal service in Queensland and provides a world class service in the management of kidney diseases. It comprises: Ambulatory Renal Services; Peritoneal Dialysis Unit, Home Haemodialysis Unit; In-Centre Haemodialysis Unit; 3 satellite Haemodialysis Units (Redlands, Logan, Ipswich) and Inpatient Renal Ward (4BR). 

The primary function of the service is to provide comprehensive, innovative, high quality, efficient, multidisciplinary renal services that produce high levels of patient satisfaction and world class outcomes within clinically appropriate timeframes in the areas of renal transplant, dialysis, chronic/acute kidney disease.  The Haemodialysis Service provides haemodialysis or plasma exchange to patients with Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), Chronic Kidney Disease, Kidney Transplants and high risk intraoperative liver transplantation.  As a tertiary referral hospital, the unit provides 24hr service 7 days a week with nurses on call overnight and a limited on-campus service available on Sunday for emergencies.
