Where you will be working

  

Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with over 300 beds, 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations annually.

   

A significant three stage re-build of WWBH is well underway, with the third and final stage of the redevelopment, a six-storey Ambulatory Care Building, commencing in 2018. Construction is due to be completed late 2020 with operational commissioning in 2021.

Stages 1 and 2 completed in 2017, delivered a new 50-bed Mental Health Building and a 7-storey Acute Services Building. Wagga Wagga Base Hospital includes an emergency department, operating theatres, women’s and children’s inpatient unit, intensive care and high dependency unit, angiography suites, additional inpatient beds and a rooftop helipad. Specialties include cardiovascular, gastroenterology, renal medicine, obstetrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and paediatrics.

What you will be doing

    

Provide safe, compassionate, person centered and evidence based nursing care to clients who have chronic Hepatitis C for the purpose of treatment, whilst embracing practice development principles in the delivery of that care. Clinical care for clients of the service includes clinical assessment for treatment, including Fibroscan and support through treatment.  The nurse provides consultation, liaison and advice for other health service providers to build their capacity to identify, manage and treat their clients with hepatitis C.

In addition the nurse will be responsible for promoting the service and providing education relating to the prevention, management and treatment of Hepatitis C to clients, primary health care providers and other services working with people at risk of hepatitis C. 
 

 

Key activities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Provision of hepatitis C assessment, treatment and patient centred holistic care with the objective of minimising long term complications.
  • Organise and coordinate all aspects of nurse led and Medical Officer clinics
  • Provide referral pathway to specialist services for those clients living with Hepatitis C  who have severe liver disease, cirrhosis or other co-morbidities
  • Connect clients with psychosocial, mental health and drug and alcohol issues to relevant services
  • Provide education for people living with chronic hepatitis C and their support people on treatment and management strategies, prevention and reinfection
  • Deliver services which support core values of diversity, equity, ethical practice and a safe and fair workplace.
  • Work with and support marginalised individuals and communities.
  • Provide education, consultation, liaison and advice for other health service providers to build their capacity to identify, manage and treat clients with hepatitis C.
  • Work collaboratively with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs)  and Community Organisations to increase the number of people accessing hepatitis C treatments.
  • Participate in and development, implementation and evaluation of projects and research as appropriate.
  • Participate in relevant service meetings and planning activities as required.
  • Undertake reasonable travel within the requirements of the position.
  • Care will be provided within in a quality framework and promote positive health outcomes. The nurse will assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in collaboration with individuals and the multidisciplinary health care team using a contemporary practice model.   

   

Selection Criteria

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), with demonstrated evidence to meet the NMBA's Registered Nurse standards for practice and meet the NMBA approved standards, codes, guidelines and frameworks commensurate with the position.
  • Demonstrated level of Hepatitis C related knowledge, skills and experience particularly in the provision of evidence based treatments for Hepatitis C or commitment towards undertaking further education
  • Demonstrated experience working with marginalised communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and/or CALD communities and people who participate in risk taking activities for the transmission of blood borne viruses.
