We are a successful, innovative and forward-thinking department, with patient care at the centre of our decision making. Our Trust gives Medicines Management and Medicines Optimisation high priority. We have invested in a, purpose built, state of the art, aseptic unit. The Pharmacy department has been successful in outsourcing outpatient dispensing, implementing electronic medicines management for all inpatient wards and rolled out electronic prescribing in our Haematology and Oncology service. Our department is also the first Pharmacy department in the country to have worked with external stakeholders to develop community infusion clinics. We also led on the introduction of unique electronic locking systems for medicine cupboards which releases significant nursing time and improves medicines security. Our next major objectives are to implement electronic prescribing for all our inpatient and outpatient ward areas.

We are actively using skill mix and role development to enhance job content and quality at all levels of the department. The department is supported by a robust Pharmacy technician management structure, enabling our Pharmacists to be actively involved in and focus on clinical and professional aspects of patient care. We provide a Medicines Reconciliation Service to all beds in the hospital which in turn supports the one-stop dispensing service and utilisation of patients own medicines.

The post holders will develop skills in Clinical Pharmacy, Oncology, Medicines Information. Clinical Pharmacy diploma training is also supported for permanent staff. There are opportunities for band 6 Pharmacists who demonstrate specific competencies and who continue to study for a clinical pharmacy diploma to apply for band 7 positions internally. All pharmacists are encouraged and supported to undertake training to become independent prescribers to develop their clinical roles further.
