The Primary Mental Health Worker is part of a tier 2 child and adolescent mental health service based within the Highland Council. The Primary Mental Health Worker provides early stage mental health assessment and interventions through liaison, consultation, supervision and training to universal services. The PMHW will also provide direct clinical input to children, young people, and their families where this is indicated.

The main emphasis of primary mental health work with children and young people is to enable community based professionals to effectively recognise children and young people with emerging mental health problems. Therefore the Primary Mental Health Worker role enhances the skills and resources of local community and specialist services. Thereby creating a more integrated and co-ordinated service that will respond more effectively to the needs of the local population.
