We have a rare opportunity for a dedicated, forward thinking Occupational therapist with an interest and proven assessment/ treatment skills within the specialities of paediatric acute neurology, acute neuro-rehabilitation, neurosurgery and neuro-development conditions, to join the Paediatric therapy Team at Southampton Children’s hospital.

As a designated level 2 A , UKROC accredited centre for neuro-rehabilitation, a major trauma, and a neuro-surgical centre: The exciting post involves:

  • Clinical leadership and provision of occupational therapy to children with newly acquired brain and spinal cord pathology requiring rehabilitation within the Southampton Children’s integrated rehabilitation team (SCIRT).
  • Clinical leadership and provision of Occupational therapy for inpatients and outpatients within the regional specialties of neurology/ neurosurgery/ neuro-oncology requiring specialist OT assessment, advice, acute interventions, equipment and discharge planning.
  • Clinical leadership and provision of Occupational therapy to children under 2 years of age with complex needs and prolonged admissions requiring neurodevelopment input, or attending as outpatients/ within the neonatal unit requiring splinting, equipment/ discharge planning.

All aspects of the job role involve multi professional team working within established and respected SCIRT, neurology, and therapy teams.  The successful candidate will become an integral member of the paediatric occupational therapy service who provide both physical and mental health services to the children’s hospital ensuring appropriate training and supervision to band 5/6 staff and service provision across 7 days.

We are looking for someone who is keen to continue to provide high level speciality skills and also be proactive to progress this service and the wider therapy service. Southampton Children’s Hospital is one of 10 largest children’s hospitals within the UK housing a vast range of specialities and located within Southampton General Hospital which is a large regional teaching hospital with links to the university and Wellcome trust research facility.

The UHS Therapy services department is a large department with over 250 wte Therapy staff and runs a 7 day service, 365 days a year using a rota system so weekend working and bank holiday will be expected.

We are a friendly, knowledgeable and dynamic combined physiotherapy and occupational therapy team that both provides support and also encourages individual progression and development.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
