Locum Appointment for Service (General Medicine/General Surgery/A&E) (Ref: 6682)

£32,961 - £43607 per annum, plus banding supplement 2B

Distant Islands Allowance, Relocation Package, free board accommodation, return flights as well as other benefits available.


Based at the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick, this post would suit doctors who have just completed FY2 training and are considering a medical or surgical career or a core medical or core surgical trainee waiting for a StR position.  Alternatively a doctor interested in a future career in general practice waiting for a StR position/a GP trainee who had completed training but who wished further surgical/medical/A&E experience.  Full GMC registration with a current licence to practice is essential for these roles.


The successful applicant will work as a part of a team in both medical and surgical departments:


  • The medical unit and its associated areas of work, participation in ward rounds, emergency medical receiving and teaching of medical students. Night shifts involve three or four nights at a time covering A and E, acute medicine as well as surgery.


  • The general surgical unit which deals with general surgery, orthopaedic trauma and emergency gynaecology. A substantial component of the post involves seeing and treating all non-medical cases in Accident and Emergency. There will be opportunity to be involved in surgical clinics and theatre lists. Night shifts involve three or four nights at a time covering A and E, acute medicine as well as surgery.
