Senior Theatre Scrub Practitioner – Registered /Operating Department Practitioner, Band 6.

We are looking for a senior theatre scrub practitioner with demonstrable leadership skills who is clinically proficient in Trauma & Orthopaedics especially in Adult Hip and pelvic surgery.

The University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) NHS foundation Trust is one of the leading major trauma centres in the country.

Our unit includes 9 theatres dedicated to Trauma & Orthopaedics, providing both elective and emergency surgery.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic theatre team specialise in elective hip, knee, spine, shoulder, hand and foot and ankle surgery.

We host the regional spinal surgery service along with our Neuroscience services.

We are a leading research centre in the south; it’s an innovative and stimulating environment; some of our pioneering works have been featured in news articles and on National Television.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s biggest teaching hospitals with some 1300 beds, performing over 34,000 operations per year across 33 operating theatres. Southampton is also a regional unit for a wide range of tertiary specialist services.

We provide local hospital services to some 500,000 people living in Southampton and South West Hampshire; and specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiothoracic adult and congenital surgery and regional centre for paediatric surgery. We are a world leading centre for cancer and laparoscopic surgery.

For us effective leadership is fundamental to this role; We are looking for a dynamic team member with excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, alongside confident decision making to support the team in achieving the highest standards of patient care within theatre.

  • Relevant Trauma and Orthopaedic theatre scrub experience, with extensive adult hip and Pelvic surgery (elective and trauma) experience.
  • Foundation management course or equivalent.
  • Flexible working
  • Clinical management experience.

You need to have a commitment to developing others and support the theatre department’s management structure. This post will enable the successful applicants the opportunity to further develop their scrub and leadership expertise in what is a demanding area of complex surgery. As the service develops further an early adopter of change for innovative working will be required.

The successful post holders will be required to cover a full range of shifts to include an early 8-6, late 11:30-21:00, night 20:45-08:00 and weekends (8-1/1-9/8-6), in support of our service commitments 24/7

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
