Health Care Assistant Qualifications: No nursing qualification but will receive in-house training to the required level. Accountability: Professionally: to patients. Managerially: to Practice Manager. Clinically: to GPs, Adv Nurse Practitioners and Practice Nurses. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical care Work alongside the clinicians in the provision of patient care. Undertake clinical care including: o venepuncture after referral of patient. o measurement of blood pressure. o measurement of height & weight. o urinalysis. Undertake New Patient checks. Undertake clinically appropriate elements of seafarer medicals. Recognise changes in the patients' observations which must be reported and acted on. Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients. Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team. Act as a chaperone. Appreciate the principles of 'Healthy Living'. Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients Infection Control Apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines. This includes: o Universal hygiene precautions o The collection and handling of laboratory specimens o Segregation and disposal of waste materials o Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment o Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries o Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures. Practice Involvement Assist in clinical audit. Assist in the summarising of medical records and entry on computer system of clinical data. Work effectively as part of the practice team. Interact with patients and colleagues in a professional manner. Support structures that are in place for the smooth running of the practice. Maintain set standards of organisation in treatment rooms/practice. Take appropriate action if standards are not being met. Recognise potential areas of conflict, preventing where possible and reporting to practice nurses/practice manager if unable to resolve. Contribute to the efficient utilisation of the nursing resource. GENERAL Any other duties as may be determined from time to time commensurate with the range of activities described above. Hours: Up to 20 hours weekly Days: Wednesday and Friday Alternative hours/days can be discussed.
