An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated band 5 staff nurse to join the highly skilled/ dedicated ophthalmic surgical team. This will be a full time vacancy working across The Ophthalmic Surgical unit and Medical Retina unit. Working hours include Monday- Saturday 7.30 am -7.00 pm over a 5 day period.

The ophthalmic surgical unit provides sight saving treatment for people across Lancashire/ Cumbria and beyond using state of the art facilities designed with high quality patient focused care at the forefront.

Ophthalmic surgical unit is a specialised department which integrates The Medical Retina Unit, Macular service, two theatres a recovery area and an ophthalmic day surgery ward offering a number of clinical settings within the unit. The department is considered one of Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s greatest assets treating up to 11,000 patients annually.

As an integral member of the team you would involve following direct patient care-

  • Pre- assessing Local ophthalmic anaesthetic patients obtaining patients medical history/ allergy status and assessing the patient’s suitability of their procedure under a local anaesthetic liaising with relevant members of the multi-disciplinary team. As part of the pre-assessment optical biometry measurement is obtained to calculate the replacement lens required for cataract surgery.
  • Admitting ophthalmic patients for both local and general anaesthetic cases, preparing the patients for their procedure and supporting post operatively till the point of discharge.
  • Patient education- empowering patients with vital discharge information following their procedure, also supporting ophthalmic patients in the management of their long term condition identifying resources/ services available in the community to support them.
  • Managing nurse lead clinics such as Fundus Fluorescein angiogram which is a diagnostic test, this involves admitting, cannulating, consenting and infusing a dye to assist in the diagnosis of disease in the eye, prioritising care managing time effectively.
  • Macular service- this involves assessing the patients visual acuity, preparing the patient for intravitreal injection or photo dynamic therapy.

The ideal candidate would receive full on the job training in a supportive environment with a team that values you. The role also provides opportunities for professional development for example nurse injector roles or a place Ophthalmic Degree programme at Manchester University.
